The history of Taiwan’s relationship with China

Taiwan was first discovered by Europeans in the 1500s, named 'Formosa' by Portuguese sailors.
The Dutch and Spanish colonized the island, encouraging mass migration from China.
In 1644, the Ming Dynasty was overthrown and loyalists fled to Formosa.
In 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan after the first Sino-Japanese war.
In 1945, Taiwan was ceded back to China, then under the rule of the Nationalist Party.
In 1949, the People's Republic of China was created and the Nationalist Party retreated to Taiwan.
Today, Taiwan is a flourishing democracy and a global leader in advanced semiconductors.
